A cable is not a rope

The high modulus PBO-Zylon® textile cables, thanks to their special construction technology, guarantee exceptional performances that make them particularly suitable for lateral, fore and aft standing rigging solutions. Let’s discover some of the main differences between traditional braided lines and PBO® cables.

The internal structure of a PBO textile cable

First of all, the use for rigging of conventional braided lines is an economical option, very fast and easily achievable; together with these advantages we also find some disadvantages:

  • The greater elongation, in particular the plastic deformation (creep), which brings a change in the lengths of the cables under constant tension and with variations in temperature;
  • Poor structural protection: the braid is directly exposed to atmospheric agents, sunlight, salt, dirt and even accidental mechanical actions;
  • Low chance of interfacing with the fittings present on board, in the case of a refitting work.

PBO fibers during construction

The “Endless Sling” construction, used by Armare Ropes, brings in itself substantial differences when compared to a rope; the textile fiber is not braided and the cable is constructed, without any type of joint, wrapping the wire around two terminals, depositing as much wire as necessary to achieve the desired loads.

Another advantage of this technology is that it allows you to build a cable with the exact breaking load required by the project. Thanks to the fact that the fibers are completely stretched, the elastic elongation is drastically reduced and with the use of special fibers it is possible to obtain cables with creep close to zero.

The cables thus obtained are compact, have a reduced diameter and weight, are stable both under constant and dynamic loads and with exceptional performance.

The cables also present an optimal durability and reliability, far better than a rope, as in the cables with “Endless sling” construction the fibers are compacted by several layers of special materials that guarantee stability and total impermeability, in addition to mechanical protection from cuts and rubbing.

PBO cables main advantages®
– Highest modulus of stretching
– Maximum lightness
– Exceptional static and dynamic breaking load
– Extremely safe
– Excellent durability
– Absolute reliability
